Hitachiin Kaoru is all of the above and more: he values his friends above himself, is naturally inclined to deal with problems on his own, is prone to think of himself as a burden, and has too many conditions before he will give himself permission to accept love that may or may not be right in front of him.
MEET ME HALFWAY
Kyouya’s eyes widen in shock.
No.
Please, no, Kaoru thinks, dread pooling sickly in his stomach, please let me take this secret to my grave.
Unmoving, they continue to stare at each other, neither of them knowing how to look away.
The Ouran clock tower begins to chime the hour and the deep clanging sound causes an involuntary tremor to pass through Kaoru’s body, releasing the coiled terror and guilt.
Nauseated, he turns and flees the clubroom.
He knows I like him. The thudding of his shoes on the marble floor cannot drown out the despairing wail caught in his throat. He knows I like him, he knows he knows he knows our friendship is over he knows it’s all my fault he knows it’s over it’s over –
